Having driven the British and Indian Forces out of Burma in 1942, General Mutaguchi, Commanding the 15th Japanese Army, was obsessed by the conquest of India. In 1944 the British 14th Army, under its commander General Slim, drew back to the Imphal Plain, before Mutaguchi’s impending offensive.
To the north, however, the entire Japanese 31 Division had crossed the Chindwin and, on April 5, arrived at the hill-station and road junction of Kohima, cutting off Imphal except by air, from the supply point at Dimpapur.
Kohima was initially manned by only 266 men of the Assam Regiment and a few hundred convalescents and administrative troops. They were joined, on April 5, by 440 men of the Fourth Battalion of the Royal West Kent Regiment, straight from the Battle of Arakan.
In pouring rain, under continual bombardment, this tiny garrison held the assaults of thirteen thousand Japanese troops in hand-to-hand combat for sixteen days, an action described by Mountbatten as ‘probably one of the greatest battles in history ... in effect the Battle of Burma, naked, unparalleled heroism, the British/Indian Thermopylae’.

Very well done.

This work is undoubtedly one of the best battle studies I have read on the Second World War. It provides a keen view of the infantryman's experience and the severity of the fighting for Kohima. There are not many books I would read a second time, but this is one. I wish we had the equivalent of it for Imphal (Evans study is wonderful but not generally available).

Not Ordinary Men: The Story of the Battle of Kohima

These men certainly were not ordinary. They were the kind of men who help to change important things. Their actions, whether those of heroes or just determined and stubbornly unmoveable men, caused a major turning point in the war against the Japanese in WWII and many were heroes.
I found the first chapters which detailed the opposing forces and their troop movements and dispositions along with names of commanding officers quite frustrating. I soon lost track of which brigades and divisions were on which side, it was only the names of Allied or Japanese officers that made this clear. In the end this confusion did not really matter for me. When I reached the chapters that told the story of what happened at Kohima I was totally engrossed, the bravery of the mostly untrained and "green" allied troops against overwhelming odds was amazing. The work of the medical officers and orderlies in abominable(not a strong enough word) conditions you must read for yourself to appreciate.

This book gives the finer details of the war in Burma to prevent the Japanese from going all the way to the Imphal Plain in India. The battle of Kohima was where the Japanese was stopped and where extraordinary fighting took place. The book gives details of both the Japanese and Allied commanders, units involved and, details of their skirmishes.
