Dr Strange Explores Black Magic

I read this storyline when it was first published 20+ years ago, and it still holds up. The artwork is ok, better in some places than others, but it is the storyline itself that is fascinating. The saga begins after Dr. Strange has defeated one villain by destroying many of his own mystical objects, and thereby releasing into the universe an equally dangerous situation. And in order to fix this, he has to hook up with former villain Kaluu, and learn to make compromises with his own sense of purity, because without using the energies of black magic he cannot solve the crisis he created. In many ways, this story arc really opened up & evolved the concepts behind the idea and role of a "Sorcerer Supreme." The good doctor has to learn to examine the greater good versus the idea of never putting anyone in harm's way. In some ways the story is a little chilling, because it examines the very concepts of morality & integrity on a large scale. By the end of the tale, Dr. Strange has compromised many of his beliefs in order to repair the damage he created to the universe. Along the way, he is joined on his journey by temporary disciple Rintrah... all in all, one of the several story arcs that make Dr. Strange one of the more thought-provoking characters in the comics.

Great story! Well written and full of mystic adventure.

This was my first reading of Dr Strange and it definitely didn't disappoint. The height of identity is questioned and put to the test as Dr Strange explores magics he never thought possible - all "justified" to safe the world he put in peril.

These issues are just as much moral introspection as they are action & adventure. The magic is fabulous, the dialogue is balanced, and the ending is awesome. Makes you smile in more ways than one!

An Akward Start, but a Rewarding Reading Experience

While I appreciate Marvel collecting this rather unexpected run, I am disappointed that it does not collect the entirety of Gillis' Dr. Strange run despite it being a perfect opportunity to do so. For those who are unaware of the backstory behind this run, Gillis started his run on Dr Strange with Strange's second solo series but that series was cancelled before Gillis finished his story. Gillis then continued his story in a shared anthology book called "Strange Tales" with Bill Mantlo's "Cloak and Dagger" series. Only the Strange Tales material is collected here, which makes this trade feel very much like you are jumping into the middle of the story. The first four or so issues are incredibly rough to follow, and even as the story starts getting great I do feel a lot of the impact of certain elements reappearing in the story gets lost as their initial appearance is not collected in this trade. Since I have not read Gillis' other material, I admit that I am only assuming they would have enhanced this story and would have gotten rid of the awkwardness in the first couple of issues. But I have a hard time believing that actually reading the story that introduces the Lords of Chaos that Strange fights in this story wouldn't have given a better opening.

The story begins with Dr. Strange already fighting against the Lords of Chaos that he unleashed on the world by destroying his magic items. The loss of his magic items also means he has lost a huge chunk of his white magic power, and great moral conflicts within this story make his already weak white magic even weaker. Dr. Strange gets forced to turn to dark magic to save the planet from his mistakes and the book gets more interesting as you see more of the moral dilemmas that Strange has to face. The thing that really makes this a great story for me is the return of Kaluu, a Z-List Dr. Strange villain from the 60s. Kaluu was a one dimensional evil wizard villain that appeared for about two issues, but he had potential as a character in his history with Dr. Strange's teacher, the Ancient One. That potential is tapped in this story and shows Kaluu as a more nuanced character. That nuance adds a lot to the story with Kaluu teaching Strange the value of Black Magic as Strange tries to maintain his good nature despite his dark actions.

Because of the awkward way it's collected, I would not recommend Strange Tales to a new reader but I would to someone who is already interested in Dr. Strange and read some of his other material. I do hope one day all of Gillis' stuff is collected in one book, but I am glad that Marvel decided to collect this even if it's in an imperfect format.

Learning to trust: the making of a preacher

This is another searching story by Hesba Stretton. Everything I've read that she has written has touched my spirit, and caused me to look at my character and my relationship with Christ, and to see if it is what it should be.

Enoch Roden lived with his mother, grandmother, and older brother. They were poor, but his mother Susan managed to bring in enough for their subsistence with her washing. Things were looking up, however. Enoch was apprenticed to a printer, and the young boy expected to be able to take care of his family. This printer had employed Susan as his daughters' nurse when they were little. However, though the printer trusted in God, he neglected to provide for his family, and went bankrupt, dying shortly afterward. His older daughter became a governess, though bitterly resenting her father's lack of care, and the younger girl went to live with the Rodens. Enoch's older brother saw Lucy's entrance into their family as the last straw, and ran off to the sea. Through it all, Susan showed a dependence on God, and joy lit her life from her trust in Him.

Enoch looked for work, but could not find any. He was trusting in himself to provide for his family, and was angry with God for not providing a job. Susan suffered an injury and was confined to bed, and in her time of healing lost all her customers. They could not afford to live, so Susan's mother-in-law went to live in the workhouse. This was a struggle for everyone, as the grandmother had had too much pride do live there before, Susan and Enoch considered it a disgrace to themselves that she should have to, and everyone would miss her. Lucy encouraged everyone to look to their heavenly Father, and to trust that He would still care for them all. Enoch finally found work, but he did not make much, and was bitter that God did not take better care of His own, since they were trusting in Him.

Enoch eventually came to see that he was not trusting the Lord, and that He was providing, if not in the way Enoch desired and expected. In the end, everything is pulled together. The lost son at sea returns home with a changed heart, Enoch learns lessons in trusting, and even Esther, Lucy's older sister, comes to know that the Lord does indeed love and care for His own. After the surprise at the end, Enoch tells his mother and Lucy how he compared himself to the Israelites who murmured against God. God had provided manna for their sustenance, but they were ungrateful because it was not what they wanted and complained, "What is this?" I cried when I read his words: how true they are! When he finished speaking, he found that he had a larger audience than he had thought, who considered it his first sermon.

The last chapter tells of the same characters many years later. As Enoch began to preach to an "official" congregation, they reflected on their past, and on Enoch Roden's training for service.

Neera Bhansali, PhD, has more than 20 years of experience in information technology with an emphasis on strategic data warehousing. She is executive director of Biomedical Informatics at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University in Miami, Florida. In Dr. Bhansali’s previous roles, she was head of informatics at CTNeT, the Statewide Clinical Trials Network of Texas, and held leadership positions, including director of Data Quality and Standards at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, Tampa, Florida.

Dr. Bhansali is the author of Strategic Data Warehousing: Alignment to Business (CRC Press, 2009). She earned a doctorate in business and a master’s in business (information technology), both from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Australia.

The paradigm of engineering is undergoing a major evolution throughout the world. The use of computers and the Internet has changed the way that we engineer and manufacture products. Among the recent trends in manufacturing are trends in which products are subject to a shorter product life, frequent design changes, small lot sizes, and small in-process inventory restrictions ("lean manufacturing"). The result of these trends is that today more than 90% of our products are manufactured in lots of less than 50 parts. These low lot quantities have eliminated many applications of dedicated production lines that were so effective in producing the inexpensive goods of the 1950 and 1960s.

The first step the nation employed to remain competitive with our international counterparts was the application of computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) to design and manufacture sophisticated products. Today, we routinely employ CAD to design products and flexible or programmable manufacturing systems to produce low- to medium-volume batch quantities. The Internet provides us with the connection to share design, marketing, and manufacturing information. We now look toward the advent of distributed design and manufacturing using agile networking as a means to produce products for the twenty-first century.

Employing numerical control (NC) and robotics in industry offers one potential solution to many manufacturing flexibility problems. This implementation, however, brings with it a variety of other problems. Robots and NC machines are designed to be flexible, self-contained, and capable of operating in both "stand-alone" and "integrated" manufacturing environs. Integrating this hardware into manageable systems has become a major focus of machine-tool makers and industry. Individual NC machines have also been made more versatile, more precise, more rigid and durable, and faster. More complex parts can be machined with higher accuracy and in less time. Timecompressed manufacturing technologies such as NC and rapid prototyping are being used more routinely to shorten product development cycles and to produce one-of-a-kind products. The benefit of all these new technologies cannot be achieved without the "communication networks" or an understanding of how these activities fit together. Today, it is not unusual for a design made thousands of miles away to be transferred to and realized in a remote site. Part programs and control instructions are downloaded from offices to machine controllers. Shop-floor operations can also be monitored either on-site or from afar. Manufacturing equipment has become part of the supply chain; capacity and availability are parameters used in planning and control of the entire chain. Further integration of the manufacturing component with design and business systems is also a key to our manufacturing success. These communication and control issues, coupled with a variety of sensing issues, are critical to the success of flexible automation in the United States.

This book focuses on the science, mathematics, and engineering of these new engineering methods. It is dedicated to making sure that the United States will remain the most efficient manufacturing nation in the world. The purpose of the book is to provide a comprehensive view of manufacturing, with a focus on design, automation, flexible automation, and the use of computers in manufacturing (CIM). Unlike other CIM books, this one attempts to provide a strong analytical science base and background in computer-aided manufacturing systems. The book is an excellent professional reference and also is an excellent text for CAM instruction.

The book is written for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses. Each chapter covers general background, fundamental principles, and applications. Unlike most other manufacturing books on the market, it includes both descriptive information and analytical models. Whenever possible, MATLAB is used in examples. We do not assume that readers have a significant background beyond basic undergraduate engineering courses. However, the book does cover a very wide range of technologies and methodologies. Readers will gain in-depth and practical knowledge in CAM technologies.

Getting dated, lots of errors

I've used this text for a reference and for teaching several courses. The main problem is that it is getting outdated--ANY text that has "computer" in the title gets outdated after a few years. Of course, there are fewer and fewer texts that address CAD/CAM in the marketplace as well, because they can't keep up with the technology. ON the other hand, manufacturing systems (particularly CNC) don't change quickly, so much of the legacy systems out there can be addressed with the text. The other issue is the number of figure and solution errors--there are quite a few. If you assign problems from the text, be prepared to check every single problem. I've alerted the publisher to this problem several times and have not seen any update or even an errata sheet.

In summary: Pretty good for an encompassing CAD/CAM text, a bit dated (especially the CAD section), and check for errors.

Extremely useful

This new edition has large color photos throughout. Useful tables and growth curves, etc are also scattered throughout the text. The photos are large, clear and well labeled with labels and arrows. In a few instances the photos are enlarged slightly too much and as a result are slightly pixelated. But most are clear with appropriate resolution. The text is well written, understandable, and the font is easy to read. Because of the large size of the photos, often figures are not on the same page as the topic being discussed in the text, so some flipping back and forth may be necessary. Detailed instructions for autopsy procedure are included as well as chapters on pathologic findings. Overall this book nicely supplements other larger textbooks of pediatric pathology. It fills the void between autopsy books, pediatric surgical pathology books, and even embryology books. I recommend it to all pathologists and pathology residents/fellows.

In this provocative book, Jim Bissett chronicles the rise and fall of the Socialist Party of Oklahoma during the first two decades of the twentieth century, when socialism in the United States enjoyed its golden age.

To explain socialism’s popularity in Oklahoma, Bissett looks back to the state’s strong tradition of agrarian reform. Drawing most of its support from working farmers, the Socialist Party of Oklahoma was rooted in such well-established organizations as the Farmers Alliance and the Indiahoma Farmers’ Union. And to broaden its appeal, the Party borrowed from the ideology both of the American Revolution and of Christianity. By making Marxism speak in American terms, the author argues, Party activists counteracted the prevailing notion that socialism was illegitimate or un-American.

Oklahoma history you want to know

This covers a fascinating portion of the history of Oklahoma that I did not know about. The book is well written and reads easily. This is not a dry history book. The book shows the initiative and independence of Oklahoma farmers during the first 20 years of the 20th century.

This is an interesting history book,which was very helpful for my own work as a researcher and writer. Nonetheless, it is certainly also valuable to anyone casually interested in the political and economic issues of early twentieth century, rural Oklahoma.
