About the Author

Jane Utley Adelizzi, Ph.D., a board certified educational therapist and published author whose work focuses on the impact of psychological trauma and its impact on learning and functioning, has worked in higher education for over twenty-five years. Excellent information, personable, well written. One BIG problem

I couldn't wait for the release of this book, particularly the kindle version. As far as information, content, and the writing - this book is a huge win and represents the first comprehensive text for Educational Therapy.

That said, there's a huge flaw that makes reading it on kindle nearly impossible. The book was NOT formatted for kindle. I run into this a lot. It seems authors may not realize the work that goes into formatting a manuscript for kindle or ebook publication, and fail to ensure that the digital book editor does his or her job. I do mean a lot - nearly 80% of the books I read on kindle share this fate. However, this book is hands down the worst I've ever encountered. Entire phrases run together without spacing between the words. The book is not searchable as it should be for kindle, the table of contents has so many errors it is nearly rendered useless, and tables / images were not formatted for the kindle. Making it worse, none of the content can be printed, yet this is a professional development or educational textbook. If the reader cannot accurately view tables and images on screen, he / she should at least be able to print it off for reference.

I sincerely hope the authors acknowledge the issue and contact their publishing company to have the problems rectified. More importantly, I hope they offer a free upgrade to all customers who've purchased the digital book to date. As I said at the outset, the writing and information are nothing less than brilliant - if only the book were readable I'd give it five stars.

Book Reflects Growing Recognition of Educational Therapy

This book has accomplished the task of conceptualizing the unique and specialized world of educational therapy. As an educational therapist, I am proud to be part of this growing field where knowledge of learning disabilities in their myriad manifestations, sensitivity to the socio-emotional influences on learning, consideration of the learner's curriculum or job expectations, and skills for assessment, intervention, and collaboration all converge on a treatment plan that promotes the outcome of a motivated, strategic, and competent learner.

Ficksman and Adelizzi have captured the essence of educational therapy out of a large body of writings relative to the concepts of this multidimensional profession. Readers will appreciate that educational therapy goes far beyond what many people think of as tutoring. The learner in all his complexity (cognitive, neurobiological, social, emotional, and cultural) is respected and guided toward his learning goals within the safety of a trusting one on one therapeutic alliance. Learning is more than academics

This book reminds me of several important themes in helping individuals learn: One is the concept of alliance (among aspects of learning as well as among key people). Another is the impact of long-term emotions, indeed often trauma, on those who have struggled with learning disabilities, ADHD, etc. - so easy for professionals to forget and so relevant. A third is the historical trajectory from the ET field's roots into a future where educational therapy can be the norm. Important nuts and bolts are included, too, and rendered real via case studies. Inspiring and thought-provoking for all whose work intersects - and that includes many of us in the helping/education professions. We are reminded that learning is indeed more than academics.

Yes, it's out of date, and yes, it is a great book

So far there are two reviews preceding mine. One gives the book five stars, the other gives it one. The one star reviewer complains that the book is out of date, and that is true. Unfortunately the author is not in a position to bring it up to date, since he was born in 1866 and is now continuing his research in a different realm. You would be foolish to take everything in this book as the gospel truth, but the quality of this man as a scientist and as a writer is head and shoulders above what we are capable of doing today. "They don't make 'em like this anymore." The field has advanced in the more than 100 years since the author commenced his research, and much of what we have achieved collectively today is the result of successive generations of people standing on Seashore's shoulders. I think this book is still of very great value today, at various levels. As I said above, I won't accept everything in this book at face value, but it is a book worth reading through more than once. In a world full of books that aren't even worth reading through one time, that's saying a lot, especially when you consider that it was published in 1937. The author was 70 years old at the time and you can see a lifetime of effort has gone into it.

The author is a physicist and has made lot of research publications himself. The thoughtful stylist presentation on all aspects of sound is an excellent introduction on the field of music. There is also enormous ideas pointers for researchers. Thava Alagu

For the Self-Producing Artist....

who has already produced a few albums. This is not a book for newbies i.e. much technical talk in terms of Hertz, decibels, and partials. In 1938 the book was probably way ahead of its time = not understood. Even Seashore seems unsure of what's to be done with the data. Prophetically he declares Sound Wave is how music will be interpreted in future. Anyone using recording software is accustomed to seeing sound wave; most media players provide visual of sound wave. Seashore's intended audience was musicians & professors; he could've never predicted recording technology would become so available to the masses. Meat of the book is in ch.1-17. Ch. 18 - 20 are all data. ch. 21-28 are interesting. Again, if you've been producing music for a few years, there's useful info in here backed by research. Some takeaways:

▶EQ: lo cut @ 80Hz / hi cut @ 10K
▶Live rooms emphasize bass frequencies
▶Vibrato signifies intense emotion
▶Rhythm gives listener sense of power & luxe

Enjoyed it very much

This book has Turkish and English translation. I read the Turkish (original part) and did not really want to read the English translation of it. It is a satirical and funny aspect of society. It made me laugh and think. The writing style is very simple and mainly satire takes presence over everything else. There are three short stories in this book. The first one is about the people's fear of socialism and how dishonest they can be. the second one is about government workers and how lazy they can be and the last one is a comparison between sane and insane people. I recommend this book for people to read it if they want to get an idea about the basics of Turkish society. Aziz Nesin was a prominent critique of Turkish society, their intellectual level and life style and you can read this point of view in his book.

Interesting and great for learning a new language

These books are great if you are learning Turkish. English on one side, and Turkish on the other. All the stories are interesting and tell a lot about Turkish society. The translations are not exact, word for word translations in many cases, but close enough to help learn Turkish. (or English if you are going the other way). I'd recommend any in this series.

The previous edition's Chapter 4 is renamed Chapter 17, "Importing Data into Excel," and is completely rewritten with its section on Excel tables located in Chapter 2. (Previous edition chapters 5-17 were renumbered 4-16.) The book is still based on Excel 2007, but notes about changes in Excel 2010 have been added where they apply. Specifically, there is a small section on the new slicers for pivot tables, and there are several mentions of the new statistical functions (although the old functions still work). Each chapter now has 10-20 more consistent and relevant "Conceptual Questions" in the end-of-chapter sections. The first two linear programming examples in Chapter 13 (replacing the former Chapter 14) are replaced by two product mix models, where the second builds on the first. The previous "diet" model was overly complex as a first linear programming example. Several chapter-opening vignettes are replaced with newer and more interesting ones and there are now many short "fundamental insights" throughout the chapters. These insights are designed to allow the students to step back from the details and see the really important ideas. All updated screenshots and accompanying explanations to reflect Excel 2007 and updated add-ins. Tips on Excel 2010 have been added where applicable. This edition now provides access to Excel add-in software via an access code to a Premium Online Content Website for every student purchasing a new book. Instructors' Resource CD: PowerPoints, and Solutions, Case, and Example files have been updated to reflect the core text 4th edition. The Test Bank has been updated with new questions and is now offered in ExamView testing software.

About the Author
S. Christian Albright received his B.S. degree in mathematics from Stanford in 1968 and his Ph.D. in operations research from Stanford in 1972. Since then, he has been teaching in the Operations and Decision Technologies Department in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. He has taught courses in management science, computer simulation, and statistics to all levels of business students: undergraduates, MBAs, and doctoral students. His current interest is in spreadsheet modeling, including development of VBA applications in Excel. Dr. Albright has published more than 20 articles in leading operations research journals in the area of applied probability. He has also published a number of successful textbooks, including DATA ANALYSIS AND DECISION MAKING, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, and SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS.

Wayne L. Winston is Professor of Operations and Decision Technologies in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, where he has taught since 1975. Wayne received his B.S. degree in Mathematics from MIT and his Ph.D. degree in Operations Research from Yale. He has written the successful textbooks OPERATIONS RESEARCH: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, SIMULATION MODELING WITH @RISK, PRATICAL MANAGEMENT SCIENCE, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS, AND FINANCIAL MODELS USING SIMULATION AND OPTIMIZATION. Wayne has published over 20 articles in leading journals and has won many teaching awards, including the school-wide MBA award four times. His current interest is in showing how spreadsheet models can be used to solve business problems in all disciplines, particularly in finance and marketing.

Christopher J. Zappe earned his B.A. in Mathematics from DePauw University in 1983 and his M.B.A. and Ph.D. in Decision Sciences from Indiana University in 1987 and 1988, respectively. Since 1993, Professor Zappe has been serving as an associate professor in the decision sciences area of the Department of Management at Bucknell University (Lewisburg, PA). He has published articles in scholarly journals such as Managerial and Decision Economics, OMEGA, Naval Research Logistics, and Interfaces.

BEWARE: Kindle version does NOT come with the code to access excel files!!!!!

I thought I was saving money with the Kindle version of this book, but unfortunately found out that I have to purchase the CD-ROM access code separately. I wish Amazon made this more blatantly clear to me.

The book itself, however, is quite good.

Textbook? or Software Manual

Between my Undergrad, Continuing Education, and the first 3rd of my Masters, I have read a lot of textbooks. This is the worst textbook I have ever had the misfortune to use. It is impossible to sit down and read a chapter, because all of the examples are in the online content. Part of the online content is a download of the authors' software. The book is written as a manual for their software. The software is very tempermental, and it takes forever to complete an analysis for the problems, because you can only run one function at a time, and have to save and exit, and re-open to go on to the next function, or it just won't work, or will shut itself down. A page full of problems does not indicate the end of the chapter like traditional textbooks, there are pages of problems throughout the chapters. This book is just frustrating! Unless you plan on convincing your company to purchase their software, as they suggest in Chapter 1, this book is NOT a good reference for anyone trying to learn Quantitative Analysis.

BUYER BEWARE - No Online Content Card

The book title is completely misleading. There is an online content access card included, but the code has already been used and you will not have online access!

The book is pretty worthless without the online content or the purchase of stat tools. If you are purchasing this book for a class make sure that you do not need the online content. If you are purchasing this book for personal use be aware that it will be a difficult read and much of the book will not be useful without the online content or stat tools.

So often, patients have no idea why they have brought a certain illness into their lives. Heal Your Body A-Z is a small, easy to use reference book which explains our physical illnesses in a brand new spiritual or metaphysical light.
Each entry shows a problem, its probable mental or psychological cause, and a helpful affirmation for correction. We can then reflect or meditate in the suggested direction and eventually change our thought patterns or heal our faulty beliefs.
The book covers many specific symptoms (like anxiety, constipation, overweight, fainting); some illnesses (like AIDS, lupus, diabetes, cataracts, ulcers, arthritis); and parts of the body (like face, lower back, joints, wrists, and sinuses). Some of the more modern illnesses like fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome are missing -- but their components are there, i.e. fatigue, pain, skin rashes or appetite problems.

Excellent book on exterior envelope materials and principles

I guess this is another Birkhauser "manual" series that are
indispensable for architects who's interests lie in
exterior detailing.

20% of the book pays attention to the dry stuff
(basic physics, structural issues, thermal & moisture
performances, etc) of exterior principles .

60%, obviously main body of book, introduces
different types of envelope systems based on materials.
Starting from stone, it covers clay, concrete, timber, metal,
glass, and plastics.

Last 20% of the book covers special facade systems that are
more relevant to recent sustainable consciousness.
Double-glass and solar manipulators are covered in addition to
solar energy concepts.

Contents of each section are typically covered in the order of
historical overview, material properties, and case studies.
If the prospect reader owns any of the "Construction Manual"
series by Birkhauser, then there is definitely many overlaps.
(Both in writings and case images provided)

One plus point is that the book can serve diverse audience group.
Depending on the years of experience in the profession,
projects provided are inspirational enough for students at school,
and at the same time, informative enough for project architects in
the office.

The real juicy part of the book is that the case studies provided are
very recent and experimental, hence eye-riveting. The detail drawings
are just enough to, not overburden us, but make us engaging. And there
are plenty of in-depth discussion on recent finds on preventive treatment
of each materials.

One caution. If the prospect reader is not good at reading dry
physics-like book (as is often the case with architects...),
I highly recommend skipping first 20% of the book for later read.

Great For Architecture Students

I ordered the Facade Manual to help supplement my Architecture 431 class/Integrations. The book is broken down by materials which I found to be an asset when choosing materials during the design process. I would recommend this manual to anyone interested in how systems can be successfully integrated into the overall building design or anyone interested in learning how to properly detail key elements in section.
