Christopher Duggan is Professor of Modern Italian History at the University of Reading. He has written extensively on many aspects of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Italy. His books include Fascism and the Mafia (1989), Francesco Crispi: From Nation to Nationalism (2002), The Force of Destiny: A History of Italy since 1796 (2007) and Fascist Voices: An Intimate History of Mussolini's Italy (2012). All his books have been translated into Italian. He is a Commendatore of the Ordine della Stella della Solidariet... Italiana, a title conferred by the President of Italy.

A Writing Guide for Novice Scholars

I am a PhD student. This book was recommended by an instructor who cared about making me a better scholar. Stott's writing advice is crisp, clear, and actionable. After I implemented his recommendations, my assignments were consistently noted for their quality of expression. My writing is judged on what I say (content), not how I say it (style). I will always struggle with my writing. In spite of that fact, I now have a book that guides and encourages me with practical, effective advice. I wish I'd had this book earlier in my academic career!

This book explained how to improve my writing

I had a Ph.D., needed to publish, thought I was a 'good writer' but in fact my writing was obtuse, rambled, unfocused and ineffective. A supervisor gave me this book. Within two years my writing was getting easily accepted for trade and academic publishing alike. Writing is now something I consider one of my strengths. I recommend this book to staff and students.

This is an excellent book. I would rate this as the best book on nonfiction writing. Bill Stott encourages you to break and bend the rules and tells you why you should start a sentence with "and" or "but." His writing flows perfectly and you can practically read it right through like a regular book. If you need suggestions on how to improve your writing slgihtly or a lot, this book is for you!

Wonderful overview of internal Computer components, et al

I work in the IT / Computer Repair industry, and I personally feel that this book is very helpful to most individuals, especially those who have little familiarity with computer systems, internal structures, gadgets and whatnots.
I found the detailed and heavily-illustrated sections regarding chipsets, processors, memory buffers, etc. to be very helpful. Most computer manuals are very technical and assume you know a computer inside and out, already (despite constant development in the industry and the fact that by the time a computer hits the shelves it is out-dated).
These "How Computers / Internet," etc. books are wonderful manuals for those who just want to know "how the heck does this crazy thing work, anyway ?!?!"
You won't be able to pass your A+ Certifications with this series of books, but you will understand much of the jargon people throw-around in the office, and you will see flow charts of "How Computers Work."
I sincerely appreciated the diagrams of a Techtronix Printer!
Suffice to Say, if "a picture is worth a thousand words," this book is pricesless for the novice and very helpful for the beginning (uncertified) Techs in the computer repair field. The usual Black & White Illustrations in computer manuals aren't exactly condusive to really getting a feel for the stuff you might be yanking out and replacing. However, this book is full of numerous full-color, full-page illustrations.

Some people are content to spend their lives not knowing or caring what is under the hood of their car, inside their watch, or in their TV sets. To them, the end product is all that matters. Other people are not content with that - they want to know how things work. What magic is taking place that allows them to watch events thousands of miles away or toast their bagel.
There are few inventions as imposing as the personal computer to understand. Integrated Circuits, ISA connections, Hexadecimal code, and many other seemingly complex words float around in descriptions of hardware and software. This book demystifies the PC - with flare.
Each component of the PC - CPU, drives, printers, mouse - is described with a down to earth, step by step description and exceptional illustrations. It is just technical enough to allow the power user to be satisfied, but easy enough to understand so us non-Computer Science majors can gain some knowledge.
My only criticism involves the CD - the layout was good, but it only included some of the information in the book. Had it been more comprehensive, I would have enjoyed it more.
This is similar in quality to "The Way Things Work" by David Macaulay. "How Computers Work" will answer the questions you've had about computers, and many that you haven't thought of. It is the perfect mix of information and illustration. Highly recommended.

About the Author

Elayn Martin-Gay has taught mathematics at the University of New Orleans for more than 25 years. Her numerous teaching awards include the local University Alumni Association’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and Outstanding Developmental Educator at University of New Orleans, presented by the Louisiana Association of Developmental Educators.

 

Prior to writing textbooks, Elayn Martin-Gay developed an acclaimed series of lecture videos to support developmental mathematics students. These highly successful videos originally served as the foundation materials for her texts. Today, the videos are specific to each book in her series. She has also created Chapter Test Prep Videos to help students during their most “teachable moment”–as they prepare for a test–along with Instructor-to-Instructor videos that provide teaching tips, hints, and suggestions for every developmental mathematics course, including basic mathematics, prealgebra, beginning algebra, and intermediate algebra.

 

Elayn is the author of 12 published textbooks and numerous multimedia interactive products, all specializing in developmental mathematics courses. She has participated as an author across a broad range of educational materials: textbooks, videos, tutorial software, and courseware. This offers an opportunity for multiple combinations for an integrated teaching and learning package, offering great consistency for the student.

Great book

I just got this book. I am an older practicer of the sport. The translation is excellent. It's very organized, I am getting a lot help with the Japanese terms. This is the only source, where I can find them. The pictures are a big help. We use this book at our Dojo as a reference. I recommend this book highly to all aikidoka.

Excellent book for Aikido

I started doing Aikido in 2008. I was looking for a good manual on this rarely practiced sport. When I learned last year, that a new book was coming out, I was very curious.
This book is well written. The introduction is good. The table of contents is set up well and the reader can find needed items quickly. The illustrations show all of the techniques in order.
My only knock on the book would be the price.
I would strongly recommend this book to any practitioner of Aikido.

I am so pleased to have had the opportunity to study this book. It is extremely well wtitten, has explicit examples and provides a menu of wonderful supplimentary materials. Johnson and Christensen have reached the perfect meld of professional presentation and comprehensible material. Not only that, they are accessible for further elaboration. With the purchase of this book, the reader has a combination of knowledge and dedication to the education of research. It's one of the best I have come across in two years of doctoral level classes!

It was cheaper than buying from the book store; It's a dry educators manual for learniing how to use research data applying statistically. Example. Number cruching test scores to identify trends... Usually needed for a Masters of Education course.

Research, in general, is not a fun topic to study. This book had very good, easy to read explanations. Not a book I plan to hold on to, but it was definitely helpful in learning the basics of research and the purpose of research.
