`Although there has been a good deal of critical writing on various aspects of "psychopathology" in the last few years, this is the first book which attempts a general deconstruction of the area. The authors therefore faced a formidable task not only in setting out the complex theoretical frameworks necessary for this task, but also in covering a wide enough area to show their general applicability and relevance... the authors have put a prodigious amount of information and ideas [into this book]... The main premises are that, far from discovering and cataloguing mental disorders which exist "out there"... psychologists and psychiatrists construct psychopathology using a language surrounded by assumptions and values which are rarely made explicit or subjected to critical scrutiny... Throughout, the authors emphasize the interdependence of language, knowledge and power, and the importance of focusing on the professionals themselves as well as on those who are the usual subjects of our theories and practices. Given the scope of the task and the relative brevity of the book, the authors succeed very well indeed in conveying both the scale of the problem and the importance of an analysis in which language is central. One of the strengths of this book is the wealth of material and analysis contained in each chapter... this book is to be highly recommended. It is, above all, thought-provoking. Not a fan

Although this book apparently has some good information, and I do like and agree with the concepts, I don't like the writing. If your learning style is not reading, this book is not for you.

Not what was expected

This was required reading for my Master's level Psychopathology class. I anticipated to learn a great deal about psychopathology, but I was severly dissappointed. Despite the raving reviews from a few sources from above and most I had not encountered until now, this piece of work was found to be biased and a waste of time for me as the reader. The entire book ran in circles using antiquated sources to tell me that madness does not exist. Since there is no madness, there is no psychopathology. Using information from the 14th century seemed a 'little' outdated to me but I even wrote to the main author to inquire the purpose of the book. I did not receive a reply.
My entire course was based upon that book and sadly, I learned nothing about psychopathology. I have done my own research to learn about this topic.
If I had a choice regarding reading this book, I would have declined after reading a review like mine where a student tells the truth, as they see it, and explains if this is considered a classic to someone, boy do I have a bridge I would like to interest you in....
I wanted to give NO stars, but the site will not allow me to do that.
