Good insight

I had never heard of a wholesaler when it came to Real Estate. I like the principal and have done several transactions in the past like this but it was always with different individuals and deals I found on my own. It makes sense to work with someone who has tied up the deal and give you the opportunity to vet it later.

About the Author
Christie Nordhielm is an Associate Professor of Marketing at the University of Michigan Business School. Nordhielm is a recognized marketing consultant and trainer, and has worked for a variety of multinational organizations. She has recently worked with American Express, W.J. Wrigley, Sprint, and Jim Beam Brands Worldwide. She has also consulted for a variety of domestic and mid-sized companies. In addition to her consulting work, Nordhielm lectures extensively both domestically and abroad. Nordhielm¿s expertise on a variety of marketing issues is often sought by publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Advertising Age, Business Week and other print and television media outlets. In addition to her publications in academic journals, Nordhielm has published in the Harvard Business Review. Professor Nordhielm¿s work is also presented in her forthcoming book, Marketing Management: The Big Picture, to be published by Thomson/Southwestern in October, 2004. Nordhielm has received numerous teaching awards and recognition as an educator. In 2003, the Northwestern University¿s Kellogg School of Management student body recognized her with the highest honor given to a Professor for teaching excellence, the Lavengood Outstanding Professor of the Year award. Prior to joining the faculty of the University of Michigan, Nordhielm was an Assistant Professor at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. She was also a Lecturer in Marketing at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, where she earned her PhD in Marketing and Behavioral Science in 1998.

Big Picture - Big Impact

After 25 years in the marketing profession as both a practioner and educator, I have completely changed my view of how marketing is done because of the Big Picture. The Big Picture framework will challenge the traditional Kotler school of marketing management and become the dominant approach to marketing. We use it now as our standard framework across all of our various marketing teams.

What makes the Big Picture so appealing? The framework makes you determine strategy much earlier in the marketing planning process than traditional approaches. It links strategy better to core competencies, and it links strategy better to the tactical four P's of marketing than traditional approaches.

On the surface, the Big Picture looks like other marketing management processes that you find in any marketing text. It has the familiar concepts: segmentation, targeting, and positiong; the 4P's, branding, customer lifetime value...it's all there. It's not until you dig deeply into the book that you begin to appreciate the richness of how things are put together. You begin to realize that "something is different here" as you begin using the framework and seeing marketing opportunities in a new light. I have used the Big Picture model in working with the most experienced, "blue chip" marketers as well as brand new marketers. The framework creates a common language between marketers and helps get alignment quicker on where to make marketing investments. Even our engineers want to learn the Big Picture to help them create new products more effectively.

Once you've used the Big Picture, it's hard to go back to traditional approaches. I recommend it to business schools and corporate marketing departments as a way to unify teams and strengthen the marketing mindset.

A book for people with a marketing problem to solve...

Nordhielm has captured a real world solution to the elusive marketing 'problem' - written in a direct and easy to read style, she has created a systematic and effective approach to helping the reader understand and navigate the often misunderstood science of marketing. This was a pleasure to read and in the end it is making a significant difference in my business. At the risk of giving away the ending - she does get the big picture. I highly recommend this book.

Since 1965, the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) has been teaching its students how to climb, kayak, and navigate; how to camp without leaving a trace; how to stay warm and dry in the wilderness; how to cope with a backcountry emergency; and how to effectively lead others through such experiences. There are many reasons for spending time in the remote outdoors. Awe-inspiring scenery, peacefulness, wildlife viewing, and exercise are all good reasons. Another is that such experiences build character: "The wildlands teach us to be smart, practical, resourceful, and observant. To hike ten hours through scabrous terrain, cross a brawny river, stay warm in a snowstorm, and navigate your way out of tangled woods tests and builds your best faculties." While no single book can prepare one for spending time in the wilderness--much less impart all the skills necessary to survive in the elements--the NOLS Guide is an eminently useful place to start. Chapters include primers on equipment (fitting boots and packs, choosing a tent, the "Five Commandments for Equipment Care"); appropriate dress for a variety of climates; and ways of traveling in the backcountry, from crossing scree fields to fording rivers. It's not a substitute for in-depth instruction in, say, snow camping, or reading a map and compass. The best book for serious outdoor adventure

I read the book in preparation for a mountaineering course - it's great - informative, well written, a good balance of solid content and easy readability. He would be a great person to go up a mountain with - but the book is a little easier to fit in the backpack!
An absolute must for anyone who camps in the non-RV sense of the word.

This book is an EXCELLENT book for anyone new (OR EXPERIENCED) in back country travel. This book can help you assess your skill levels (if you are honest with yourself). I believe being honest with ourselves about our skill sets as well as our abilities is crucial to back country travel (be it camping, backpacking or simply hiking). This book can help you learn skills -- but you have to practice them! It also can help you assess areas of weakness where you need to hone skills OR ask for HELP in learning. Taking a class in crossing crossing glaciers? Learning how to recognize potential avalanches? If you know you don't have these skills, you are truly taking a risk in backcountry where these exist. Back country medicine? Do you know how to best care for wounds? This book is full of essential information. I recommend it to anyone who will be in back country.

From the opening chapter, where Rolheiser eloquently compares the burning spiritual fire of Mother Teresa, Janice Joplin, and Princess Diana, readers will be fully engaged in a unique and altogether fascinating discussion of Christian spirituality.

As a regular columnist for the Catholic Herald, Rolheiser has clearly honed his writing skills. Like an eloquent marriage counselor, he deftly tries to reconcile the rift between contemporary spirituality and Christianity. For example, he points to the four pillars that support a healthy marriage of Christianity and spirituality, which are "Private prayer and private morality. Social justice. Mellowness of heart and spirit. Community as a constitutive element of true worship." "Spirituality is about what we do with our unrest... [it] is about what we do with that incurable desire, the madness that comes from the gods, within us." Rolheiser (Restless Heart) contends that the late 20th century is marked by a kind of spiritual restlessness, even though the spiritual landscape is littered with a variety of "spiritualities." He argues that there is richness in such spiritual diversity and plurality, but that many seekers lack direction in their spiritual search. Rolheiser develops a Christian spirituality that he believes offers some definite direction for seekers. At the heart of a healthy Christian spiritual life, he says, there must be four essentials: "private prayer and private morality; social justice; mellowness of heart and spirit; and community as a constitutive element of true worship." At the base of Christian spirituality, he notes, is the Incarnation of God in human flesh. If Christians can focus on the embodied character of their theology, then the four essentials of Christian spirituality become easier to embrace. In the latter half of the book, Rolheiser develops sketches of a spirituality of community (ecclesiology), a spirituality of sexuality and a spirituality of justice and peacemaking. We can sustain ourselves in the spiritual life, he notes, by being a mystic, sinning bravely, gathering ritually around the Word and breaking the bread, and worshipping and serving the right God. Rolheiser, a popular columnist for the Catholic Herald and author of several books (e.g., Against an Infinite Horizon, Crossroad, 1996), teaches the meaning of Christian spirituality and how to apply it. He tackles belief in the Incarnation, community worship, social action, and sustaining spirituality in daily life, using formidable substance, good sense, and compelling anecdotes to reach the everyday person. Though aimed at Christians, Rolheiser's spiritual lessons are stripped to their essentials with sensitivity to various traditions. Reconnecting with spirituality

I am a former Christian and have been on a spiritual journey for some time. I have been looking for a way to redefine my faith, to recommit to at least some of the Christian tenets I rejected years ago. Nothing I read helped me; authors (including C.S. Lewis, among others) all seem to assume that their readers share their faith. But in Rolheiser's book his first line says it all: "This is a book for you if you are struggling spiritually." I was struggling before I read the book, and I still am, but Rolheiser has helped me understand what the struggle is about. This is a book that can be read with benefit by believers and nonbelievers alike.

Inspiration for the new millennium

This is the most inspirational--and challenging--book I've read in this or any year. This book is full of practical advice for increasing the spirituality of both the individual and the church. While Rolheiser is a Catholic priest, the issues he discusses are relevant to all Christians. His ideas on the concept of community I found especially thought-provoking with regard both to church and family. They provide useful ways of maintaining the focus on God even in the loud, messy chaos of everyday life and for worshipping with a community of believers, all of which you might not choose to associate with in other circumstances. Rolheiser's chapter on Christian sexuality as energy can be inspirational for both single individuals and those who are married or in other relationships. I would highly recommend this book for individual study or group discussion among thoughtful Christians of all denominations.

Rolheiser does an amazing job of taking the reader on a journey of spirituality. He carefully crafted the book to help the reader understand the fundamentals of a solid Christian spirituality. Though clearly written from a Roman Catholic perspective, the writing and insight is so helpful that any Christian would benefit from it. This book will truly help one's reach expand his grasp spiritually.
The man who recommended this to me is brilliant for recognizing it as the best book on Catholic spirituality he had read in the last ten years.
This is the kind of book that starts great discussion groups and leads them to the formation of a community.

Of questionable reliability

The author has a prize winning subject. The first four chapters were well written and answered questions I have always had about the pecking order at the Reich Chancellery. For example,What did Julius Schaub actually do in the entourage around Hitler?, Who did one need to know to approach Martin Bormann etc. But when I arrived at chapter five "Was there a Nazi Luxury" I was appalled by a series of egregious errors which made me question the reliability of what went before. For example the author seems to think that Manfred von Brauchitch took time off from being Chief of General Staff at the Bendlerstrasse to drive race cars for Mercedes Benz: irresponsible at a minimum, and that Rudolfo (sic) Carrociola was an "Italian race driver" and that Zeppelin was an auto manufacturer (Maybach produced a luxury model called the Maybach Zeppelin) The publisher should have hired a competent editor.

Kate Rumbold is a Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Birmingham. She has published widely on the quotation and reception of Shakespeare, with particular focus on the eighteenth century, and is the co-author, with Kate McLuskie, of Cultural Value in Twenty-First-Century England: The Case of Shakespeare (2014).
