A Great Book for a Great Civilization!

This book is perhaps the most comprehensive guide to the world of the Phoenicians. Considering there are few books on this subject to begin with, there is not a great deal i can say in terms of how this is vastly different. If you've managed to find your way to this book, i highly recommend it.

This book has many advantages over others. Not least the fact that it's actually a compilation of the works and studies of a number of scholars. Among them are Sabatino Moscati, Maria Eugenia Aubet and others who have written extensively on this subject both directly and indirectly. The composition is such that it is often possible to identify regions of conflicting viewpoints. Though contradictory at times, this aspect is actually helpful in illustrating the present ambiguity with regards to many areas of the subject. A lost civilization in many respects, a great deal of cross-referencing is needed and this is where the book has a dinstict advantage. Particularly interesting is that the book draws from a variety of backgrounds so that the works of modern Cypriots, Italians, Arabs and Spanish are included. This aspect alone is enough to suggest that the book is without bias of any kind. This is not to say that it is manual of distinct essays, but rather a book with different scholars contributing to the many chapters.

The content is equally excellent. Here the Phoenicians are described from their Canaanite origins to the ventures of Hannibal. A true civilization with character and identity, they were far more than the great navigators of antiquity. The book clearly outlines everything from art and religion to trade and political institutions. Their ventures enabled them to contact and influence every known civilization one could name, and the book even goes as far as summarising their relationships with Greeks, Etruscans and Egyptians.

The book is overwhelming with detail, and has a good selection of coloured illustrations. I have read a number of books on this subject and this is definitely my favourite. For those who know nothing of this subject, i truely believe that the ancient world cannot be fully understood without some knowledge of this great civilization.

It's amazing how much of Phoenician culture is still around, much of it passed off as Asseryian or Roman or Egyptian. So much innovation and creativity lost to the historical victors during the greek and Roman conquests. Well covered in this anthology.

...Sometimes a book demands to be written. One of the best examples of this is the first SPE monograph of Pressure Buildup and Glow Tests and Wells. (1966), Matthews and Russell, which collected and collated, for the first time, the theories on well testing postulated in myriad papers on the subject since the 1940s. I believe the Dr. Danesh has satisfied a similar demand with his authoritative book on PVT / Phase behaviour. Such a modern compilation of all the developments in these complex subjects is long overdue and the book is thorough and thoughtfully written by an expert in these subjects.

...The chapters include a review of basic thermodynamics and classification of hydrocarbon systems, fluid sampling and laboratory experiments, correlations of PVT properties (which we all rely upon), phase equilibria and equations of state for complex hydrocarbon systems, gas injection and, of particular importance, how to input PVT data to compositional numerical simulation models.

With the gentle cadence befitting a simpler time, Bradby (More Than Anything Else) harvests a bounty of bucolic imagery for this poetic look at a family farm. A boy relates the challenges, never-ending work and sweet rewards that come with working the land. On each spread, minimalist stanzas ("A plow some grain pray for rain. A sow a shed may all be fed") precede a more personal statement ("Mama cooks the corn cakes, Daddy says the prayer. Sorghum, ham, and jelly it's been a good year"). By book's end, the boy sadly shares the information that encroaching suburban sprawl and development mean the end of his farm home and way of life. Throughout, Rand (Sailing Home) alternates between sunny full-page watercolor portraits showing the boy and his family, whom he depicts as African-Americans, and smaller airy vignettes providing a good sense of the comfortable rhythms of the proceedings. His parting illustration of a lone bulldozer razing tall trees brings home Brady's message in a quietly dramatic style. Ages 4-7.

Grades 2-5--A beautiful story about a vanishing way of life. Warmth and humor fill the pages as a farm boy recalls, in verse, many family-shared moments-stargazing, eating Mama's ice cream, and jumping the fence to escape a butting goat. He also remembers the hard but satisfying work of building a new home, mucking out the barn, and harvesting a big crop. Ultimately, he shares his sadness when the city grows closer to his home and the bulldozer comes. "A beetle/a fly/a cow gone dry./A rabbit/a farm/they're all gone," and memories then replace them. The first six lines of each stanza are short and quick, and are followed by three longer, slower, more personal lines. The economy of words efficiently paints the picture of the hard work, "A stump/a rock/pull till you drop"; or country pleasures, "A dove/a ring/wake up and sing." These descriptive phrases appeal to all the senses. Equally as strong are the watercolor illustrations, often with humorous touches, that capture the memories and emotions in large double-spread paintings and small vignettes. The wide expanse of sky and field contrast with later pictures of the encroaching urbanization. The juxtaposed illustrations of traffic and buildings with a quiet stream dappled with sunlight are particularly effective. Changing Times

Once Upon a Farm is a story about a family living on a farm. The story is told in poetry form. It tells about all the things you do daily on a farm, and all the hard work that is involved. It also tells about the fun times. Then for an unknown reason, the farm is taking away and destroyed so the city can build things where the farm once was. I think the author felt very strongly about this type of thing. It is a story about something good that is taken away, because people believe it is for the better of everyone.

I especially liked the section on pre- and post-rational thinking

Louv provides perspective on the time period, it's mindset, and makes stimulating connections to other “channeled” work, modern science/scientists, British history and modern magical traditions. I especially liked the section on pre- and post-rational thinking, or the pre/trans fallacy! Some of the credit given to Dee in the last section seemed far-reached, but not at all impossible to be fair. I would have liked a lot more detail on Dee's sessions and the Enochian language, but I would still recommend this to anyone researching hermetics, history of western magic, etc., as a quick and informative read.

Awesome work about the arguably most influential man in modern history!

Let me preface this by saying that I am a huge fan of Jason Louv's writing and have been since Generation Hex. He is the only author I would place side by side with Robert Anton Wilson (my favorite author of all time), so there's that. You know my bias going in.

The Angelic Reformation: John Dee, Enochian Magick & the Occult Roots of Empire is about Queen Elisabeth I's court astrologer, Dr. John Dee and his influence on the modern world and the western Magickal/Esoteric tradition. Louv (it seems to me) comes at this from the perspective of somone well versed in the western magickal tradition, both in theory and practice, and therefore lends a unique perspective to Dee's life and work. This is because a lot of occult writing and concepts will not make a lot of sense unless one has explored them in practice and so developed an occult bullS*** filter and an understanding of "twilight language".

Like Giordano Bruno, Dee was a man both of science and of spirituality/mysticism/magic. He was one of the last great explorers and scholars to straddle the line between the spiritual and the profane before the schism of "enlightenment" and was one of the most (if not the most) knowledgeable men of his time, basically knowing most of what that could be learnt through books and academic study. Dee influenced the forming of the British Empire, the dissemination of mathematics to the common people of Britain and many other achievements, but none as weird as that of Enochian magick, received through the magickal workings of Dee and Edward Kelley.

This book also explores how John Dee and his many important contributions to western society and historical trajectory (read: the British Empire) have mostly been expunged from the historical records for political and fundamentalist religious reasons (which is always good for suppressing information).

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone interested in the occult, John Dee or just history in general. Git u one!

A book full of everything.....

I just finished Moonfire by Linda Lael Miller and didn't think I would like another book as much....but then I read Angelfire. The characters we fantastic, the story line has so many twists and turns...very exciting, very enjoyable reading...it had me hooked until the very last page. A definite "must read"!

"Angelfire" is another wonderful romantic little book by Linda Lael Miller. It is a quick read and a great escape. "Angelfire" is a continuation of "Moonfire" which I have not read yet, but I am going out to find it now.

Fan of Miller, but not Angelfire

In Angelfire, Miller departs from her usual stories based on strong characters and relationship. The main characters in this book never form a true loving bond and they continue in an emotionally withdrawn and abusive relationship through the last pages of the book. I kept waiting for insights as to why the female character would allow this, but this was never answered. With her next book, I hope Ms. Miller will return to writing about relationships based on strong individuals forming partnership-relationships.

A solid first installment to an Adventure Path. Since ...

A solid first installment to an Adventure Path. Since many of my players are new to the game, the basic dungeon-delving and smallish cast of NPCs provides several teaching opportunities. None of the locations are overly tricky or complicated, and most of the monsters are exotic and interesting. I look forward to completing this installment of the path and moving into some of the more juicy bits of the story.

There is enough information here to make the start of this path more compelling for experienced players.

I'd suggest that players look through the player's guide over on Paizo so that they can build appropriate characters and get some background on what they will be doing.

The book itself is rather flimsy - it fell apart while I was reading through it, never mind when it started seeing use at the table.

Good content, crap packaging

I'm really enjoying the detail they went with in this module, the gazetteer at the end regarding the city of Wati is surprisingly full of depth and fluff. Unfortunately, the binding is terrible, with pages coming off the spine after what was likely my second read-through. Taking a star away because I'm going to have to pay more to have this thing spiral bound.

Great Stuff

First, I want to state that I am a huge fan of Adventure Path (AP) books.
Take special note: This is the first book in the campaign series of Mummy's Mask.

Pros:
This is a well written and very fluid AP.
The AP uses varying types of mobs, traps and even haunts. Very awesome.
I don't really have very many cons about this book in particular.

Cons:
Perhaps it is user error, but my copy of the book began to fall apart after the 3rd or 4th use.

Third World Critique of Human Rights Movement

Mutua's book is a must-have for those seeking to understand why a hegemonic, westernized approach to human rights is so problematic. Speaking from the perspective of an "insider/outsider" (the author is a leading international human rights scholar and activist from Kenya), he examines both the positive aspirations and contributions of human rights as well as evidence of its limitations and even dangers in practice.

Rather than embrace a strong version of cultural relativism, Mutua clearly condemns violations of human rights in both North and South. Nevertheless, he demands that human rights leaders must spend time in self-examination with regard to the history, origins, and contemporary contexts in which violations occur if abuses are to be effectively combatted.

There is much here for debate and discussion both inside classrooms and among activists in the field. Along with works by Anghie, Gathii, Rajagopal, Woods & Lewis, Andrews, Knop, Wing, and others, Mutua's book is a foundational contribution to the loose network known as the "Third World Approaches to International Law" (TWAIL) movement.

This book is very interesting, especially for comparison to western ideology as the author is of African origin. The book offered me a very interesting perspective on the subject of human rights from a totally different mindset than my own. Overall, a very solid book and I definitely recommend it.

Cernovich never fails to impress

I first read "Gorilla Mindset" by Mike a few months ago. I knew "Danger & Play" existed but I waited until it came out in paper pack before I bought it.
I wish I would have purchased it digitally once I was done with "Gorilla Mindset". I feel like I missed out on a few weeks of living with an extra edge. Mike is straight forward and to the point with his writing. I have read other remarks about it being short. Thats BS. If the info is impactful it doesn't have to be as long as "Atlas Shrugged". I have taken the different thoughts on MINDSET and have installed many of them into my own life. Mike has made a positive impact on my life and for that I am grateful. I will continue to read his writing and listen to his podcast as long as our visions and mindsets align. Since reading I have started a business, worked on the things I need to get a podcast going, and have started to grow my personal brand. Its not easy, but with the right mindset,....I will look back at it all and laugh that I thought it was hard.

Beastly book, offering solid advice and brutal honesty.

Danger and Play is a collection of articles from Mike Cernovich's Blog with the same name. It focuses on Masculinity, as the title suggests.

Overall, I liked the approach of the book, it starts off hard and fast; Mike writes in a disgustingly arrogant manner on what types of behaviours he views to be masculine and feminine, and chastizes men who complain instead of do, who feel entitled to get what they want instead of working for it. Reading it made me feel a bit inadequate, in a good way. Its as though something in me sensed this was the type of un-apologetic, brash advice and criticism I needed to know what i need to work on in order to feel more confident as a man.

After the blazing intro, he starts tackling subjects like money, fitness, relationships and of course Mike's specialty: Mindset. Your going to get something out of this book.

The tone of the book changes considerably based on the topic Mike is writing about. The profound depth and beauty of the subject matter written in the final section titled "Motivation and Inspiration" is difficult for me to describe.It's sort of startling when you compare the content of the first segment which come off as sort of "Intelligent and Intense Frat Boy" to "Conscientious Motivator and Philosopher." To illustrate, there's an article where Mike details a grisly personal struggle he had to overcome, listing his doubts and insecurities before resolving to push past them and conquering the ordeal. The article moved me to tears. It's a powerful gesture when a strong person reveals their shortcomings and weaknesses; they in turn help you realize that they're not much different than you. It's motivating.

It's a powerful book. Grab it.

Great Compilation

I have been a long time reader of Danger and Play and a Big fan of Mike. I love this book as it is a compilation of Mike's Best blog posts on various topics such as life, health, women, etc. This is a book for those who are not pussies and have thick skin, i.e. men only. This will make you into a masculine man if followed through and I highly recommend it to everyone on the path to reclaiming their masculine self.

I do have a suggestion for Mike in regards to the format/editing of the book. For some articles it is clearly copied and pasted from the website and it says that on the book as well so I would edit it for the book. It would also help to add some pics for at least some of the pages as for example one of the pages you said about not smiling too much and on the blog you put a pic of your face looking badass and you don't have that on the book., "but you still title it "does this face look like a dork to you" but no pic. so it makes it confusing to the reader when he sees no pic but with that caption on there.

Overall a fan and love this book man!
