Enjoyed this book about the Tarahumara culture in 1970's as I was hiking this region at the time. The locals used Corn to make Beer (no bottling) and partied annually at each Ranchita to get the corn crop planted (25% of corn used to make beer for planting parties, baptism, cures, etc.) Much other reports on these short-fast-mostlyVeggie runners of the trails in Copper Canyon. We traded plastic drop clothes (roofs) for bear-grass baskets. Very friendly people to backpackers at that time. Hike to hot springs and below was TERRIBLE (waterfalls, etc). So get a NEW hiking book on this area before you go.

Wonderful, Deep Devotional Material in a Readable Format

Finding helps for our devotional time can be a challenge. Often, many of them merely offer a "Daily Crumb" rather then a satisfying meal of Scripture. This new collection of the late Dr. Martin Lloyd-Jones writings, arranged into 365 daily readings, seeks to offer devotional material that engages the mind in addition to the heart. One feature I especially like in their arrangement is that each month has a theme, such as "New Life in the Spirit" (January) or "Knowing and Serving God" (August). I have enjoyed the continuity and thematic thinking that this enables the reader to do. One other feature that I enjoy is that each excerpt lists the book and page numbers from which it was taken, something that many collections like this fail to do. This enables a person who is interested in reading more on a given topic, to know where to find it!
All in all, editor Robert Backhouse has provided a great service in compiling these many words of wisdom, challenge, and devotion from Lloyd-Jones into a useful resource for believers today. Try it and see how it can help you 'glorify God and enjoy Him forever'.

Perfect for day-to-day reading

Too many devotionals fall short when it comes to conviction and rebuke. Lloyd Jones doesn't pull any punches. Each day he challenges you to think differently and pushes you further up the hill of Christianity. It is strange saying D. Martyn Lloyd Jones is my favorite author since he didn't actually write any of these books. However, the fact that all his books come from his sermons or lectures show that his insight and wisdom are as timeless as C.S. Lewis or Jonathan Edwards. If you are looking for a daily devotional book that gives more than fluffy words of comfort then look no further. This is the book for you!

For someone seeking an early morning devotion this little book is perfect. I have read several of Dr. Lloyd-Jones' books and have thoroughly enjoyed them all. To have selections from a variety of his works is very nice. It does, however, leave me wanting to read the books from which these selections have been taken.

April 1, 2013 - In addition to the above comments, I would like to add that since I have been enjoying this little book for 3 months now, not only is it a perfect early morning devotional reading for me, I have used several of the daily readings in encouraging others in their walk with the Lord. This is really a perfect introduction to Dr. Lloyd-Jones.

About the Author
Tracey Lister knows how to shop, cook, and eat in Vietnam. After fifteen years in the Melbourne restaurant scene, Lister took a sabbatical in Hanoi, where she met Jimmy Pham, founder of KOTO, a grassroots charity that helps street kids through vocational training in cooking and serving. Lister stayed on for a few years, setting up accredited training programs for the students. Her time at the charity, along with husband Andreas Pohl, resulted in their first book, KOTO. Lister currently runs a successful cooking school out of Hanoi.

well illustrated, recipies lacking

scanning the recipes i found that substitutions or short cuts were made. sadly these changes would result in an end product not true to the product. for example, under fried food, banh goi. they use wonton wrapper as the pastry for the fried dumpling. if you look at the picture, clearly dumpling is made of a pastry from a rolled out dough. another example is making rice noodles, on pg 22. the instructions are confusing. when making the steam noodles, Vietnamese use a special steaming pot to make these noodles. the pot has a fitted ring where one can stretch a muslin cloth over. and this ring is placed on top/along the edge of the pot. try stretching muslin cloth on a steaming pan and you can see how it's not going to work. like i said, well illustrated, but the recipes and instructions are lacking.

Lulu is the petite charismatic southern belle, who wisely takes on the challenge of helping the young woman heal. She enlists the support of the enchanting southern gentleman, Crowley J. Mason IV, whose ocean blue eyes seem to hypnotize Leah (as they know her) from the start.
Leah is an unwanted stranger in Crowley’s quaint southern town of Rivertown, South Carolina. He holds her at arm’s length as he tries to decipher the mystery of her recent past, but before the young lawyer realizes it, he finds Leah tucked protectively in his arms. He wants nothing more than to help her heal…if she would just trust enough to let him in.

Best book I've read in a long long time.

I couldn't put this book down. At first I thought it was going to be hard to take, things the heroine goes through, but the author skillfully took me to the edge of being too much to handle, but somehow never went over the line. As if watching something graphic on TV, I could 'look away' enough to handle it, and those parts didn't last forever. Once the 'situation' changed, I HAD to find out where life, and God, would take Leah. So many great and colorful characters in this book, and they became so real. The world of their little town became a real place. I must say, the conclusion of the drama took a twist (gladly) that I wasn't expecting, and things I feared the author would do to the heroine, she didn't. :) The epilogue was wonderful, and very satisfying, bringing everything around full circle and leaving me with a satisfied smile. Much like one of Leah's beloved donuts, lol. This is a great story, free from profanity and graphic sex, and very enjoyable. I can't remember when I've enjoyed a story more. Loved Crow (hehe) and Leah, and Lulu and the whole gang. I recommend this story to anyone who enjoys a good clean romance. Watch out - you just may fall in love with Mr. Crowley Mason.

Loved, Loved, Loved "Lulu's Cafe"!!!

Although I read this a while back, I neglected to do a review...possibly because I could not find the right words to put down for it. Awesome, superb, wonderful, lovely...all of those seem inadequate, even though the story was each one of those. This was one of the best books I've ever read in my life (and I've read A LOT!!). I loved how the story was told, the development of the characters and the emotions that jumped off of the page. I laughed and cried and was sad to see the story end. I cannot wait for the next novel. T.I. Lowe rocks!!

NOT AN EASY BOOK TO READ!!!

This book although is fiction, reflects actions that unfortunately take place everyday in this world. People should be aware of the horrible ordeal some women go through their lives, fortunately some are saved. This book takes you through the very bad but also takes you to some good hearted people that give a hand when somebody needs it.
