Kenneth L. Holmes was a professor of history at Western Oregon State College. He edited and compiled Covered Wagon Women, drawing on archives and private sources. Anne M. Butler, a professor of history at Utah State University–Logan, is the author of Daughters of Joy, Sisters of Misery: Prostitutes in the American West.

A Real Eye Opener

I read Lillian Schlissel's book, Women's Diaries of the Westward Journey, years ago & was profoundly impacted. I knew it was tough, I didn't realize how tough. I came across this after reading The Blue Tattoo & enjoyed it. Every entry gives a slightly different twist on the hardship & horror that these remarkable people experienced & endured to develop our country. We owe them such a debt of gratitude & respect. I think it would be good if at least one of these books were required reading in high school because I think most people have no idea.

Wagon Trains

Love, love, love women's diaries during the 1800's. They give a true picture of what women's struggles were. When you have read several diaries you realize women were the survivors and worked harder then the men. Sorry men it is just a fact. Some books are better than others, but you are literally reading about someone else's life. Diaries are very encouraging as even though times can be tough now-just surviving the day and burying so many children puts current problems into perspective.

It seems to be a very accurat dialogue of info on many of our American frontier travels out west to many destinations. The book is in very good condition. It has references between diarys on every writer and person in the stories, explaining relationships in friends and families. A keeper as far as holding on to history in the making in America. It could be used for genealogy.
