About the Author

Worth the Time Even if You've Read all the Others

I admit it: I'm a sucker for Redwall books. I've read all of them; when my Library ordered The Sable Quean, I was the first to place a request for it.

Of Jacques' most recent Redwall books, High Rhulain was the most disappointing, though Eulalia and Doomwyte were better -- but this one! The Sable Quean is, in my opinion, the best Jacques book to come out since Triss. (Taggerung is my all-time favorite, for those dying to know.)

Alright, I'll try to keep this spoiler-free:

The plot has a number of familiar Jacques elements, but he keeps you guessing here more than I might have anticipated. Memorable villains (if not the most ostentatiously evil) and an ensemble of sympathetically displayed woodlanders give the novel an excellent cast. I feel that Jacques should have focused more on his hero rather than on his hero's comical friend, but that is a minor quibble. This novel does not have the epic feel of Mossflower or The Long Patrol, but tends to convey even more than usual the folksy atmosphere of Jacques' world.

I can recommend this entry in the Redwall cannon with great enthusiasm. Check out your library and start reading. I did, and it only took me less than a week to finish, college work aside (yes, I still read Redwall books at 19). Happy reading!

Incredible

Brian Jacques has done it again. The Sable Quean is a terrific book, a worthy additon to the acclaimed Redwall series.

The beginning starts out well, but as the story began to follow the familiar routes of the previous books, I was a little disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I love the Redwall books. However, Jacques brilliantly rescues the story halfway through the book.

The Sable Quean is a magnificent book from Redwall, rivalling the first Redwall books and is quite possibly the greatest book yet from the Redwall shelf. This book is written proof that the amazing Brian Jacques is definitely NOT losing his touch. I'll be eagerly awaiting the next book in the Redwall series.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I pre-ordered the book and it overwhelmingly met my anticipation. It had the usual cast of characters with the addition of a warrior mole. I would indeed like to read about more of him. For fans of Mossflower Woods and Redwall Abbey, this tale is a welcome addition to you library. Hurry with the audiobook!!

Across Orion's Arm

Across Orion's Arm is interesting in two ways - it shows how a man-made wormhole might be used to make interstellar travel possible, and it places humans in the role of 'little green men' who terrorize innocent inhabitants of an alien world. I enjoyed the book and recommend it as food for thought.

This novel provides a credible story about humans using a wormhole to travel to another star system. There's even a romance, plus lots of scientific and technical detail. That author states in the preface that the book isn't 'hard' sci-fi, but it sure reads like it is. The characters are more developed than in a typical sci-fi novel. In summary I found the story to be very entertaining.

Mini review: transitional and lacked the intensity of book one

I really loved Broken Beauty, the first novella in this series; enough to buy book two. I enjoyed Broken World but it felt transitional to me, and lacked the can't-possibly-put-this-down intensity of book one. I think that this series is powerful and very well-written. I admire Adams for addressing the subject of rape, and most importantly its aftermath. I'm definitely going to keep reading this series.

Absolutely compelling book I felt Mia's Story on so many levels

I hoped for Mia to have some peace in this book, but her story is so real and raw. Broken World was so touching and emotional because you go from Mia's trauma to her trying to cope. I love the way the story displays how there is no "just bouncing back" from being sexually assaulted. Mia showed us how those demons come for you every day and how sometimes they best you. I was so in the moment with Broken World and hurt with Mia because she was surrounded by people but so alone and I understood her feelings. I found myself wishing I could give her some of my courage and strength or even just to be there for her. Thank you Lizzy for putting a great character's voice on a strong subject and making it so that other peoples story may be heard through Mia's.

heartbreaking moments of a girl finding the strenge to be a new young woman

I found the beauty in this story to be the honesty in the struggles and pain of the main character. Carrying such a burden of tape is a life changing event… to then carry the burden of publicity, political charged focus, lacking a solid family support system and pregnancy.... it is a truly emotional time and I give the author credit for not missing a beat of the emotional roller coaster.

But OH! Wait! There's more you say......... (sorry this spiralizer recipe book brings out the "infomercial" in me) ;-P

OK, so I am one of those gadget people.....
We had a spiralizer for about 3 months before we saw this recipe book, which was great timing as my enthusiasm (and my family's) for all things "zoodly" was waning fast!
*BTW you can get a spiralizer very inexpensively now on Amazon,
but I digress, the timing for this recipe book was perfect for us as I had pretty much thought I had exhausted the meal options for my beloved zoodles.
But OH! Wait! There's more you say......... (sorry couldn't resist the "infomercial" in me) ;-P
This book is BIG on easy flavorful and quick meals, *one of our newest favorites is the Shrimp with slow roasted tomatoes and zucchini linguine.
I've attached pictures so you can see the steps and how delish it looks and can better imagine how good it tasted.
My only negative would be that there are not many pictures (there are only about a dozen) I really like to see how, what I am making, is supposed to look when finished. Even though it is weak in that area we found the recipes to be excellent and flavorful and a great jumping off point to customize many of them to suit our family's tastebuds. Like with this shrimp recipe, it goes without saying all the various protein substitutes you can do to this along with spicing it up or into a more ethnic version with your favorite spices.

Bring on the spirals!

Spiralizers are an amazing invention... replacing pasta (spaghetti) with something healthier and less fattening... veggies!
The veggies also cook faster than if you just do slices.

This book takes your spiralizer out of the cupboard and on to the counter. You get so many different recipes, beside the typical "faux spaghetti" or "spiral veggies with olive oil". Think outside of your box!

The beginning of the book covers the basics, how-to spiralize a variety of vegetables, and some tips and safety notes.
Then there are 4 categories in the book.
1. Gluten Free Recipes
2. Paleo Recipes
3. Vegetarian and vegan recipes
4. Raw Food Recipes

By segmenting the recipes into these 4 sections, those with one of these specific diet plans an focus on just their section, which simplifies life for them. Each section starts with the list of recipes in that section. For those of who do not subscribe to one of these 4 diets, then the book is a bit chaotic. It's hard to focus on any kind of theme with the recipes. Subdividing those sections into more categories would make the book feel more organized for us "eat-it-all folks."

Be aware, the recipes are designed to be easy-to-read and you don't have any chit chat or backstory. What you get for each recipe is a short paragraph description followed by the recipe and a side section with Variations on that recipe or TIPS for that recipe.

The recipes are modern-fresh, and really sound delicious. I know it might be a deal-breaker, but there aren't photographs of the recipes. Somehow it doesn't bother me, because knowing they are all made with spiralizer, they do have that same-ness which helps me easily visualize the finished dish.

It's a nice-sized softbound book, with clean design and easy to peruse. Most recipes are a single page, but some are 2-pages. The 2-pagers are on facing pages so you don't have to turn the page back and forth. yay!

I feel like it's more of a $15 than a $20 book (am I stuck in the 90s?), but it would be great motivation to eat more spirals, and thus...eat healthier.

Okay--I'm a nut for a new kitchen gadget and the spiral maker is no exception, but are spiraled vegetables just a curiosity? Marilyn Haugen doesn't think so. She has created a beautiful cookbook of 150 recipes she has created using spiral cut vegetables.

Since my husband isn't too adventurous, I'm very interested in some healthy remakes of favorites that substitute zucchini spirals for standard pasta, like Chicken Zucchini Tetrazzini. But the salads and many vegetable options are very enticing to me.

The only drawback to this book is that there are only about a dozen recipes pictured. The rest you'll have to make to see. This doesn't both me, but some cooks like to see what they are aiming for before they cook. I recommend this cookbook if you have a spiral cutter for veggies. I can't wait to get cooking.
