Bone Tongue: A Collection of Poetry, by Scherezade Siobhan

Bone Tongue is the anatomy of the sharpest rose. It is sculpted from each petal's sleeping body. This is a collection of diary entries from the poet when she was suffering from severe clinical depression and it gathers the repetition of every ache into a filigree of poems.

Maybe these aren't even poems, Maybe each page carries a cult of foxes gathered around a fire waiting for the midnight to fall. Maybe it is a single hour caught in the butterfly effect. Maybe it is the distance between death and dreaming. The tongue has calcified the way a mind makes a relic out of every memory. Days are chiselled into verses that get carved onto this hard-shelled tabula rasa. It is a constellation of cicatrices. It screams. It kicks its own cure. It walks like a war song - naked, bloody & glowing.

Finding Scherezade was like a blow to the head
By Agnieszka M
In 2014 I stumbled upon Scherezade Siobhan’s tumblr account by accident. In fact, I found her through some post in which one writer was gushing over this mysterious figure, viperslang (Scherezade Siobhan herself) and a couple of other poets whose presence and words served as major alterations to his readerly and writerly life.

I wanted to make a comeback back then, to re-dive into poetry writing and immersing myself in Tumblr’s writing community again. And, hopefully, honing my non-existent skills. Finding Scherezade was like a blow to the head. It was both a blessing and a nightmare – as all of a sudden I was bombarded with something more mature and insightful than I had expected. In fact, it was quite unlike what I had expected.

Hers was a new level of writing, for me. Wordplay, intricacies, difficult words, beautiful imagery. Magnificence. I got burnt. I wasn’t used to this. I wanted to get used to this and, over time, I did. Devoted myself to reading her words carefully, fully receptive. And I was very excited to hear that she was to have her first book – “Bone Tongue” published by Thought Catalogue.

“Bone Tongue” comprises of 11 poems written during the time when Scherezade Siobhan was flogged by the merciless whip of severe clinical depression. Each poem is a day – starting from day 1, ending on day 101 which seems like the last day of horror but isn’t necessarily la fin (although it does sound like a step forward). These poems tackle the themes of loss, hope, her femininity, the terrible struggle and love.

In the second poem “day 100: a phoenix too frequent” she recounts in detail what makes her feel whole: regular daily activities like doing laundry, taking care of animals, sitting under the tree. It has a great, melodic flow to it, every simple activity an explosion of fantastic imagery that has left an imprint on the chest of my memory. I read it four or five times already and each time I was equally glad I could experience this poem anew.

“to pretend you failed the recipe so your mother can

struggle with her glasses and remind you how cooking isn’t

about perfection but happiness”

Incidentally, this might be my favourite poem from the book.

In “day 67: you are the street that never sleep” she talks about love – overwhelming, unrelenting; a confession that is far too powerful to be ignored. It ignites and wakes you from your own slumber as you latch onto another line. In the rawness of “day 12: saints and ghosts” I felt remarkably sad, as Scherezade’s own sadness was almost palpable, getting more and more solid with every single word. At times it felt as though I was reading about a dead person (which might actually be the case – but then again I cannot be sure).

Another favourite of mine would be “day 101: be done”. I return to it every now and then, as it’s like a mantra you should hammer into your head and recall every single time you feel like you’re not enough, like you’ve failed again. It is a great closing line, a sudden leap. You can realise, alongside Scherezade, how powerful, strong and non-disposable you are.

“be done. with being told how

to shroud your scars”

If I could, I’d squeeze the entirety of “be done” in here, but it’s impossible for obvious reasons. I will then limit myself to posting snippet that I deemed perfection:

“with putting a silencer

on your tongue

every time you wanted to shout.”

In her writing Scherezade appears to know herself very well, as though she’s explored herself through her past experiences and struggles very thoroughly. She doesn’t shy away from depicting the reality as it is, she’s not scared of showing. Moreover, while reading her words I don’t feel lied to. The tone is sure, personal, genuine.

There is an ascent to her descent, here.

I’m recommending “Bone Tongue” to anyone who’s looking for quality poetry that is like a permanent tattoo on your mind after you’ve read once, twice, ten times. You won’t be disappointed.

Clever use of words, however...
By Amazon Customer
Clever use of words, however; the feeling I left with was something more cerebral and less genuine and heartfelt. I also expected more poetry for a kindle read.
