A Favorite Regency Romance

Escape waits in my bookshelf. Escape from workplace drama and financial woes. Escape from temporary disappointments and heartbreaks. When times are rough, there's nothing like an old friend pulled from my bookshelf.
Joan Smith didn't survive the transition from Regency Romance to Sexy Regency Romance but since I didn't make the transition either that didn't bother me much other than the fact that there were no new books. Her older books stayed on my shelves. Joan Smith wrote funny, no-sex romance, her heroines were mostly smart-mouthed and sometimes a little know-it-all but they never failed to amuse me. My favorites, Talk of the Town, and Country Flirt. (review by my sister, Shannon Hyle)

mediocre regency

Samantha Bright is unique, she has a mind of her own and though she is reserved she is not shy around those she knows. She does this without coming across as domineering. Because of this I thought the title of the book was strange; I never thought that she was a flirt. She was someone thrown into odd circumstances. She is holding onto the belief that one day Lord Monteith, 'Monty', will finally realize that she is the one for him. Of course, he only manages to come to visit about once a year...hmmm.....
'Sam' has a wry sense of humor, especially about herself who at twenty six is unmarried. She lives with her widowed mother who is close friends with Monty's mother. The first half of the story dragged, Monty's uncle Lord Howard manages to come home after living many years in India. In his fifties he is looking for a wife and sets his eyes on Samantha. Though a touch eccentric he is filthy rich and not afraid to flaunt his wealth. Uncouth and vulgar at times Sam actually considers the man.
There is no chemistry between the two and I can understand why but there is very little between Monty and Sam and that dampened the romance. I don't expect to read a regency and read about sex. What I do like is some chemistry between the hero and heroine. I enjoy humor which I didn't find here. There was tension but it was Monty's frustration at not understanding his new feelings toward Sam. I found it hard to believe that the man was in his thirties and didn't know that he more than cared for Samantha.
Because of my frustration I have mixed emotions about recommending 'Country Flirt'. If you are a die-hard lover of this time period you may want to give this a go. But if you are looking for more romance, some chemistry and humor try The Tyrant by Patricia Veryan.
