"Acoustic Immittance Measures: Basic and Advanced Practice by Lisa Hunter and Navid Shahnaz is a long-overdue update on important test procedures that are applied each and every day in clinical audiology practice. The book begins with a current review of the principles underlying acoustic immittance, including anatomy and physiology of the outer and middle ear. Separate chapters are then devoted to a practical discussion of each immittance measure, including single-frequency tympanometry, multiple-frequency tympanometry, the acoustic stapedial reflex, and wideband reflectance. Wide band reflectance is a novel approach for evaluation of middle ear function. The final two book chapters are devoted to a systematic description of specific clinical applications of acoustic immittance in infants and children with varied auditory disorders.
We believe that this text will provide the reader with the basic knowledge and the clinical information necessary to exploit acoustic immittance measures in clinical audiology for many years to come."

About the Author
Lisa L. Hunter, PhD, FAAA is an associate professor of otolaryngology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. She is the principle investigator of a National Institutes of Health project on Newborn Hearing Screening and Diagnosis, and has completed several research grants in Otitis Media and Hearing Loss in Children. She has authored over 50 publications on otitis media, pediatric audiology and diagnostic audiology, and has given over 100 national and international presentations. She has chaired numerous committees for national professional organizations and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education as well as a past member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Audiology.
Navid Shahnaz, PhD, Aud (C), is an Associate Professor of Audiology in the School of Audiology & Speech Sciences at The University of British Columbia (UBC), where he has been since July 2002. He has also been working as an audiologist during this time in a private practice. Before joining UBC he was an Assistant Professor of Speech and Hearing Sciences at University of Arizona. He received his MSc (1996) and PhD (2000) degree in audiology and communication sciences and disorders from The School of Communication Sciences and Disorders, McGill University. During his residency at McGill University, he served as a faculty lecturer and clinical supervisor of audiology for three years. Before joining McGill University to pursue his studies he was working as a clinical audiologist, instructor, and researcher for six years at Tehran Medical Sciences University and in other private practice sectors in Tehran, Iran. Dr. Shahnaz's main area of research interest is diagnostic audiology, specifically multi-frequency tympanomety and wide-band energy reflectance in newborns, children, and adults.

Informative and Succinct

Clear explanations of physical principles measured by immittance audiometry. I reference the chapter on multi-frequency, multi-component tympanometry more frequently than I reference any other book chapter in my office.
I disagree with reviews stating that the information in the book is not clinically relevant or that it would benefit from adding case examples. One of the best features of this work is that it's amazingly lean. The authors have managed to include enough information and explanation to make the book helpful without being verbose in the least.
Aside from being refreshing, this feature helps keep the work affordable. If you're thinking about buying this book, you probably don't need me to point out how unusual that is in an audiology text.

Not what I was looking for.

This book is heavy on history and theory, and has no clinical information at all. I was hoping for something to help me in the clinic. What I got was a nice history lesson and a lot of math.
